With the blessing of some beautiful fall weather we were able to install the windows on the front side of the house. It was a great work day and we thank everyone who participated. We especially want to thank Marvin Conrad for the beautiful work he did on the construction of the windows.
The FOW Committee got the okay for the requested zoning variance at the Adams County Board of Zoning Appeals last Thursday evening. This is for the land that Dona Schaeffer donated to the Indiana German Heritage Society upon which the Wyneken House presently stands and where it will be permanently located for future years use. The request asked the BZA to allow a museum to be located in an agriculturally zoned land space.
One neighbor asked the board to require FOW to set and meet a time-line for “closing up” the building. This will require the completion of the basement, moving the house over it, and finishing the re-installation of the outside doors and windows. The BZA did stipulate in their findings that these three items plus the finishing of the slate roof and starting a visual “buffer” between the Wyneken House and this neighbor’s property.
FOW’s plans do include completion of these items before next October, at which time the BZA will hold a follow-up review of the actions that have been taken to finish this work.

These are the most recent plans, submitted by Scott Greider, for the Wyneken house basement:
June will be here soon and that means the start of summer festivities. The first big festival will be Germanfest. As in past years Friends of Wyneken will have a table in the cultural tent. After you have enjoyed a beer and brat, stop by and say hi and check out what’s new.
See you there!
Spring has brought about a change in the weather and that means we will be donning our work clothes and grabbing our tools to work on the house. There is a lot happening right now. Soil tests have been completed at the house site and shortly the land will be surveyed so a deed can be drawn up. We were fortunate to obtain 10,000 bricks from the demolition of the Olds Wagon Works building in Fort Wayne. Fleming Excavating will be hauling the bricks and storing them until construction begins on the basement. Regarding the basement, there have been some modifications to the original plans to accommodate certain requirements. Things are moving forward.
Scott Greider, the architect who has been working on a design for the Wyneken house basement, has submitted a schematic of his idea for the area. As Scott stated, “I believe it’s worth considering a contemporary approach to the new basement. The idea being to restore the house to it’s original, while using the basement as a “bridge to the 21st century”… equal commitment to past, present, and future – all in one building!” A 3-D animation of the plan can be viewed on Youtube using the link: the animation
