Greetings from friends of Friedrich C.D. Wyneken,

The Reverend Wyneken was instrumental in starting many of the area Lutheran Churches and one of the founding fathers of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The “Wyneken House” is the only remaining home of an Indiana pioneer religious leader.

Tremendous strides have been made towards the restoration of the Wyneken House through the efforts of the “Friends Of Wyneken” – a committee of the Indiana German Heritage Society.

  1. The Wyneken House was initially saved by moving it to its present location.
  2. Land has been surveyed and graciously donated for its permanent resting, which is where the house is presently located.
  3. The original house layout has been determined and will be restored as per the original circa 1850 Adams County Indiana home.
  4. Logs were donated and milled for beams and flooring; Windows and doors have been made and are in the process of being installed along with the beams and flooring; also the exterior of the house is in the sealing/painting restoration process.
  5. A Septic System has been approved and filed with the State and Adams County.
  6. Architectural drawings have been approved for the future basement.
  7. All necessary permits have been acquired.
  8. The Friends Of Wyneken established their own Website and E-mail.

The Friends Of Wyneken committee plans to have the basement built and the house moved onto it within the next 6 months. Immediate funds are needed to complete this phase of the project. We appreciate all your past support and donations and are asking for any financial assistance you can give at this time. Please make checks payable to “Friends Of Wyneken of IGHS” with “Wyneken House donation” in the MEMO line. All donations will greatly be appreciated. Please send checks to:

With the blessing of some beautiful fall weather we were able to install the windows on the front side of the house. It was a great work day and we thank everyone who participated. We especially want to thank Marvin Conrad for the beautiful work he did on the construction of the windows.

The FOW Committee got the okay for the requested zoning variance at the Adams County Board of Zoning Appeals last Thursday evening.  This is for the land that Dona Schaeffer donated to the Indiana German Heritage Society upon which the Wyneken House presently stands and where it will be permanently located for future years use.  The request asked the BZA to allow a museum to be located in an agriculturally zoned land space.

One neighbor asked the board to require FOW to set and meet a time-line for “closing up” the building.  This will require the completion of the basement, moving the house over it, and finishing the re-installation of the outside doors and windows.  The BZA did stipulate in their findings that these three items plus the finishing of the slate roof and starting a visual “buffer” between the Wyneken House and this neighbor’s property.

FOW’s plans do include completion of these items before next October, at which time the BZA will hold a follow-up review of the actions that have been taken to finish this work.
